Here is an image so dense with narrative information that the talents of photographer James Doolittle (1889-1954) seem wasted in the genres he is best known for:  Hollywood studio portraits and still photography.

In this advertisement photo for a 1935 Plymouth, the car may be the least interesting subject.  More compelling is the period view of Malibu, east towards the mountains and west towards the ocean as reflected in the car's right front hubcap.  To the right, a man dressed in louche apparel and lighting a cigarette is the object of attention for one woman on the beach as well as a gentleman grinning from the car's passenger seat. In the foreground, the fully clothed woman at left seems enamored of a large inflatable flesh-toned sea-horse while another dressed in a flowered kimono seems to be manically dissociating herself from everyone.

[The 1935 Plymouth itself is actually a 1934 model modified with new fenders.]
