Early in her career as a photographer, Imogen Cunningham (1883–1976) focused on allegorical imagery. These photos are rendered in the atmospheric, painterly style of photography known as "pictorialism," popular with artists like Stieglitz, Clarence White, and George Seeley during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
