Samuel Gottscho (1875–1971) was perhaps the most highly skilled and soulful architectural photographer of the twentieth century. After a life peddling fabrics and lace door-to-door (studying wildflowers in his spare time) he became a photographer at age 50.
The extraordinary depth of field in this photograph is worth noting, as the automobile sitting outside beyond the window, the shiny mesh of the window screen, and the darkened interior of the room in the foreground are all in perfect focus.
