The neglected work of the distinguished photographer Harold Haliday Costain (1897-1994) has received more attention in group and solo exhibitions since his death twenty years ago. His black and white work - commercial products, architecture and gardens, industrial WWII imagery, and his photos of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor - are familiar to those who have studied his photographs.
Receiving even less recognition is the wonderful work he did in color - and there is a lot of it. He developed his own style of making tri-color carbros; the photos have unusually even surfaces and were printed with white borders , making them appear almost pristine. Some of these carbros picture flowers and vegetables in still lifes and in gardens. The pictures of interiors and interior details, like this image of a coved china cupboard, are blasted with high wattage studio lighting.
