Before "Gold Hill," Porter produced a series of muscle car pictures like "Burn Out" (seen here) and more flying car pictures like "Overshot," attracting attention from art galleries, museums, and the press. His photography would now be seen as art photography, a label that makes his work subject to art criticism.
As such, Porter has been faulted for the high level of artifice in his work, in which the car photos are by visibly contrived. The inventive nature of his photographs is what makes them so popular - and how many of Matthew Porter's fans read art criticism? I don't know.
