A commercial dye-transfer photo of four dolls.  The picture may be the product of a toymaker's low budget and/or a photographer's lack of experience with the three-color subtractive assembly photography process.

One way to tell the difference between a tri-color carbro and a dye transfer print is by looking for surface imperfections that are specific to each process.  In a dye transfer print the unexpected spots and slubs of pigment are softer and appear to be part of the print's finish rather than the textured flaws that materialize above and below the surface of a tri-color carbro print.
