O. Winston Link (1914–2001) will always be associated with trains and railways, and more specifically with The Great Western and Norfolk Railroad in Virginia which he began shooting for posterity in the 1950’s. This is a relatively early photo and lacks the cinematic irony of his best known pictures that juxtaposed young people engaged in nighttime outdoor activities while a speeding steam locomotive passes nearby.
Link never used a strobe. He preferred to use banks of high wattage flash bulbs powered by a generator and car batteries to light his moving subjects.
