Issue No. 8: AUTO WORLD
The long-delayed and barely anticipated eighth issue of selectedpictures.com is titled "Auto World." We're automobile enthusiasts, more for the way cars look than the experience of driving them. With oodles of photos to choose from and with no idea how they would be arranged we began to feel that perhaps it might be best if we dumped Issue No. 8 and jumped ahead to Issue No. 9.
Shy and afraid of the immediate future, we wasted three or four months eating, sleeping and staring at just about anything online before we began our selection with dizzying aerial views of cars stuck in traffic. We appeared to study photos of automobile parts we couldn't identify, threw them aside and began composing reviews for products we've never used on websites we've never visited.
Now and then we returned to photographs of cars - some by great photographers whose work with automobiles was seen as a departure from more serious subjects like "Our Diminishing Energy" and sad visual essays like "A Friend to Almost Everyone But Me." At one point we thought we had hit paydirt with a group of photos celebrating the monkey wrench and its role as a handy tool in assembly line vandalism and locker room mischief.
Somehow we managed to settle on the attractive pictures you'll see here, a number of which are only loosely based on the theme of someplace called "Auto World." Some photos are amusing, some are in color and all are notable for the automobile's marginal role in the advance of photography over the last 125 years. Thank you.
