No Hollywood photographer was as famous for his cosmetically flawless portraits as Paul W. Hesse (1896-1963.) He was unambivalent in his use of artifice: color enhancement, color replacement, color retouching, blurring, dropped-out backgrounds, montage, etc.
His technique was sought after by actors/actresses who were beautiful, not naturally beautiful, not totally photogenic, or aging - and by commercial products with similar problems. He had a long association with the Studebaker Motor Company.
