There is so much retouching in this portrait of film actor Lloyd Nolan by photographer Harry Warnecke, that it appears in some areas (such as in the treatment of the hands) to have been painted - specifically in the manner of 17th century French artist Georges de la Tour who was famous for his chiaroscuro scenes by lit by candlelight.
