While this is an official WWII press photo issued by the U.S. Navy, it's hard not to feel something for the passengers of the sinking freighter. The periscope's viewfinder confers a sense of detachment and measurable distance from the event, as the desolation of the sea and eerie silhouette of the ship disappearing below the horizon create a haunting image.
