If not for the subject matter, this standard eight by ten chromogenic print would be unremarkable. But if one studies the underside of the space shuttle, there is an unusual amount of visible detail and color where one might expect to see shadow. This suggests that the photo was shot with a digital camera which can interpolate light and color where the light is insufficient to to be photographed using a standard camera with standard optics.
It's no surprise that this photo is credited to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration which was a pioneer in the use of digital photography, most memorably with the first photos from the surface of Mars in 1976.
