Samuel Gottscho is popularly known for his illustrated guide to wildflowers in the Northeast. I have a preference for Gottscho’s architectural photos of homes built by newly prosperous suburban New Yorkers during the 1920’s. He had a precise yet delicate approach, using natural light when shooting interiors.
The WOR radio station was first located in Bamberger’s department store in Newark, NJ, and was owned and founded by Louis Bamberger from 1923 until his death in 1944. Gottscho photographed Bamberger’s Tudor-Style home in the wealthy enclave of Llewllyn Park, in West Orange, NJ (also home to Thomas Edison.) It may or may not be a coincidence that Gottscho also photographed the interior of WOR’s new transmitting station in Carteret, NJ in 1935.
