Annie Liebowitz (b.1949) was commissioned to photograph the athletes of the 1996 U.S Olympic Team and shot these synchronized swimmers at M.G.M Studio's swim tank in Culver City, California.

The image is reminiscent of the Matisse painting, La Danse, in which a group of young women dance "en circle."
