Untitled (Factory Worker)
Harold Harvey, 1930
vintage gelatin silver print
12″ × 9.125″
The body of Harold Leroy Harvey’s (1899–1971) art photography is relatively slim though he had steady work as a commercial photographer. Harvey was also a chemist and inventor; his expertise in the darkroom was in demand by such photographers as Man Ray and Weegee (Arthur Fellig.)
A recurring motif in his art photography was achieved by shooting his subjects through plate glass. Rather than combine negatives he would shoot a glass positive through a glass positive. The dark borders seen here are characteristic of this technique.
