During the 1930's, Costain visited the Esmond Textile mills in Esmond, Rhode Island on assignment to photograph a purportedly thriving American textile industry for Fortune Magazine. The image is a montage of two images, a technique that Costain employed here to express the vigorous level of activity in a manufacturing plant.
